I have created 30 small studies for my painting 3 class. Among these 30 studies about 15 work came out in way that I intended to do in which I was very pleasesed to see the outcomes. The high points for me in this project was to work very fast and working fast belongs to the nature of the type of work that I execute.
The low point was that I was creating these images on a surface which was 6x8 inches. Most of the work I have done so far are at least 4 feet by 4 feet. My work needs a space to burst itself out of the canvas. Therefore, keeping up with this discipline to make 30 paintings in small size was hard but I admit that it made me stronger and caused me to question my practice habits.
Before creating theses studies my work was mainly figurative abstract which executed on surface by intensive gestural strokes.now, its different, painting is becoming more like playing chess. The question for me now is how to apply different strategies against this bare canvas. Well the canvas has always been a canvas, what matters is what and how it get covered by the artist mind. Different visions create different images over this so called canvas.I have come to the point to see more possibelites with what I am doing. I am adding dimensions to my abstract figurations. I am in the estate of experimenting rather than cutting the through to the finishing point.I am asking myself that I now where I am now but my question from myself is that where am I going with what I am doing? in how many different ways can I compete against myself to arrive to my desired point?
I enjoy works by Ceciley Brown to most part. what I mean by that is I enjoy the speed of her brush strokes chasing this white canvas. However, I not connected to the way she uses colors in her work. I like the colorations of few of them but other than that I think that the way she executes colors on canvas is very crude. The similarities between my work and her work are speed and using figuration and our differences are the way which each of choose color.
Eric Aho is another artist that I am drown to his work. Although his content is mainly landscape but the feelings that his paintings convey are chaotic. His work amplifies a scene of rage in terms of subject and form . I think that me and him share same way in applying paint over the canvas but not our subject. His work talks about the natures disastrous and mine talks about human disastrous.
William Kentrige is one of the artist that his work has so much influences on my work. Even though this notion may sound unreal but it is true. He shows human's loneliness, drama, nostalgic and Todays realm in which mankind find himself stuck with his kind. .Most of his work are executed with charcoal and pastel. I use mostly acrylic to create my work. His work is very narrative and mine has narratives too.The compositions that he creates are much more realistic but mine are much more abstract. In both Kentrige"s work and my work one can see that a figure is stuck in the room and the feeling of suffocation as well as sorrow are obvious attributes of such conventions. All and all, we both use figure in our work as dominant element but each of us have personalized our vision and depiction of this so called figure.
Philip Guston is a type of artist that I really feel connected to his work. His subjects, compositions ,Monumentality both in scale and content, narretivism and meta physicality of his work in general are like a spectacular yet comm explosion that gravitate my eyes. His images are beyond this physical word. I think that his work deals with human's drama and his work has the essence of human touch. His work reminds me of mantel, viscosity. The way that he applies paint on canvas is very pianistic. Its all about the inner feeling. I share a lot of elements with Guston but our pallets are different. I think we both show sense of rage and suffocations but each of us arrive to this feelings by taking different routs. If I want to use metaphor to describe his work I would say that his work shares the same feelings as George Ensor did and the only differences are ;he depicts those feelings in abstract forms and he showed the humans drama of 20th century.
